Tips For Undoing Household Damage That Your Kids Cause

Posted on

When you have kids, you have to be ready for just about anything at any given moment. Sometimes, it may seem like the kids are out to completely destroy the family home, but if you know how to handle some of the situations they cause, you'll be better prepared to undo the damage before it extends beyond the area. Here, you'll find a few tips to help prepare you for some of the things your kids may do to your home.

Plumbing

It's amazing how many things will flush down the toilet without any problems, but then, there's those things that the kids stuff down there that don't want to go up or down and have left you down a toilet.

If you have something stuck in the toilet, the first thing to do is to shut the water off to the tank, then drain it. This may not be necessary, but if something should happen, you don't want to have to clean up a toilet tank of water from the floor on top of everything else – preventative measures!

If you can see what's stuck, do your best to gently work it out of the hole. If the item has flushed beyond view, you'll likely need to remove the toilet, turn it on its side, and remove the item from below. Chances are, pushing it down will not help your situation.

If all else fails, call your local plumber – his or her number should be readily available at all times. The faster you are able to call during a plumbing emergency, the faster the service and the less damage that will occur.

Broken Glass

Broken glass will happen from time to time and it seems to be impossible to get it all cleaned up without finding at least one sliver in your foot.

To clean glass up off of the floor, use your vacuum with the hose attachment. Never use a brush-roller when cleaning up glass – it will shoot out from under the vacuum and spread the mess. Begin cleaning the mess at the furthest point in which you found glass and work your way towards the impact zone. This will help to ensure that you find all of those scattered tiny pieces before you get tired of cleaning up the mess.

Always put broken glass in a sturdy box before throwing it away. It will rip through bags and can cause serious injuries.

It's always something around the house – never nothing. Begin preparing yourself for the things that your kids do and you'll be ahead of the game and ready to take it up a notch.
