Your HVAC System: Using It To Freshen Up The Air In Your Home

Posted on

Keeping your home smelling fresh and clean can be a struggle in the winter. Having to keep all of the windows and doors closed up, until a day comes in which the temperatures rise enough to air things out, keeps all of those cooking and living odors trapped in your home. Did you know that you can use your forced air heating and cooling system to keep your home smelling great? Not only can your air conditioning installation contractor help you, but here, you'll find a few ideas that will help you do just that.

Scented Furnace Filters

Some manufacturers actually make furnace filter scent packets that slide right into the slot with your new filter. The packets come in a number of scents that last for about a month before needing to be replaced. When the furnace kicks on and begins to pull air through the filter, the scent from the packet is picked up and pushed into the air throughout your home.

One great thing about these scent packets is that when the scent runs out, you know that it's time to replace your filter to protect the efficiency of the system.

You can also make your own filter packet using your favorite essential oils scents. All you have to do is put some of the oils on a square of cheesecloth and attach it to the outer side of the filter before sliding it into position. This won't hold the scent for as long, but it gives you the ability to choose any scent that you desire to fill your home.

Automotive Vent Clips

You know the little vent clips that you use in your car? Well, you can use them in your house as well. Simply clip them onto vents throughout the home. When the heat or air conditioning kicks on, the scent is released from the clip and fills that room of the house.

The benefit of using the vent clips is that you can choose different scents for different areas of the home.

Gel Scent Pods

Head to the "smell goods" section of your local grocery store. Look for the small gel pods that are meant to be put inside the plug-in scent releasers. Pick a scent that you like.

Now, poke two small holes in the top of the plastic seal. Place it down in the floor vent. As it heats up, the scent will fill the space rather quickly. These typically last about a month before needing to be replaced.

These, along with proper furnace and duct work cleanings will help to keep the winter odors to a minimum.
