Prevent The Problems: How To Get Your Septic System Ready For Spring
Spring will be here before you know it. Once it arrives, the rain storms won't be far behind. Your septic system has already endured the long winter, which means it might not be ready for the weather change. This is particularly true if your holidays were filled with additional house guests. Here are four steps you need to take to make sure that your septic tank doesn't fail you once the weather changes.
1. Reroute Your Washer Water
If you're anticipating a wet spring, you need to reroute your washer water as soon as possible. Torrential rains and seasonal flooding can saturate the soil over your septic field. When that happens, your septic tanks won't be able to process the residential water that will be flowing through. You can't stop doing your laundry during the rainy season, but you can make sure that the water doesn't flow through to the septic. Simply run a gray water line from your washing machine to your flower beds. That way, you can do your laundry with putting too much strain on your septic system.
2. Install Septic Risers
If you don't have septic risers, it's time to install them. Septic risers are tube-like structures that are installed above ground to provide easy access to your septic tank lids. Once the risers are in place, your tanks can be emptied without the need for additional digging. They also allow you to monitor your septic lids for signs of damage.
3. Change Your Filters
You might not know this, but your septic system is equipped with filters. Over time, those filters get coated with fecal matter, food, grease and hair. Unfortunately, a dirty filter can't protect your septic system properly. To avoid problems, you should have your filters changed before spring arrives. It's a good idea to clean or replace your septic filters several times a year. If you're not sure where the filters are located, ask your septic care provider to show you while they're out servicing your system.
4. Have Your Tanks Emptied
If you haven't had your septic tanks emptied in a few years, you need to have that service provided before spring arrives. Many people don't realize that your septic system has two tanks attached to it. Both tanks need to be cleaned to avoid potential problems, such as clogs and backups. When your service provider comes out, make sure you ask them to empty both tanks.
